Electronic Arts (EA) dropped a bombshell recently – they won’t be distributing physical copies of their video games in South Africa anymore! Yep, you heard that right. Reports from GLITCHED reveal that EA’s local distribution partner, Prima Interactive, sent a letter to retailers with the surprising news.
This decision will affect popular titles like FIFA, Need for Speed, and Battlefield, but the game that’s likely to take the hardest hit is Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, which is set to launch on April 28 for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
Prima Interactive’s letter stated that EA had to pull the plug on local distribution due to recent cuts in their workforce and operating expenses on March 29. So, distributing physical copies in South Africa is just not feasible anymore. Instead, EA will be handling their South African operations from the UAE, with a focus on digital platforms and minimal marketing efforts.
As for what this means for the release of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor in South Africa, it’s still unclear. But chances are, the physical launch in the country is officially cancelled.
When asked for comment, a representative for Prima Interactive said to IGN Africa, “I can confirm that it is true beyond that we currently have no further comment.”
